Chapter Seventeen

Sunwatch Cafe

Downtown Albany, NY

“You know,” I tell Jenkins, “I never would have pegged you for someone who would darken the door of an establishment that serves avocado toast and mango refreshers.”

He picks up a thick slice of bacon and bites down on it. “I come for this, mostly. Best bacon in the city. They actually pour a little maple syrup over it. But yeah. The millennial snowflakes can keep their avocado toast and mango refreshers.” He uses what’s left of his bacon to point at my drink. “And their cucumber spritzers. Or whatever the heck that is.”

There is zero chance that I am going to eat anything of substance right now. But after deciding to tag along with Jenkins, I couldn’t resist the cucumber spritzer after I saw a picture of it on the menu.

He is right about Sunwatch. It definitely appeals to a younger audience. It’s certainly not my grandfather's diner; no cracked vinyl seating, worn formica tables, and no short-order cook slinging out overcooked eggs amidst stacks of pancakes. Here the concrete floor is stained and polished to a high sheen. The accent wall is made of chipped red brick, and the farm tables are clean but rugged. The place definitely has a strong urban/farm feel going on.

I wrap my lips around the top of the straw and take another long sip of my drink. The cucumber juice mingles with lime and mint, mixed with carbonated water on ice. It is exactly what I need right now. After Jenkins’ revelations, I couldn’t stand another minute in that dark, stuffy control room back at the station. Between the change of scenery and the drink, my mind is already starting to clear again.

“So,” Jenkins says around a mouthful of eggs, “how do we make sense of those fingerprints? I can’t take all this to the chief without offering some theories. And if he finds out that I sat on this for a few hours before telling him, then there’s a strong possibility that he will fire me. I need to figure this out, and quick.”

“Then let’s work through it,” I say. “As soon as we leave here, you can make a beeline for his office. Start with everything you know about Parsons. I need to know who we’re really dealing with.”

He sits back in the booth and slides a napkin across his lips. “It’s pretty cut and dry. But now I’ll have to go back over everything I know about him and look at it with new eyes. But Parsons is thirty-five years old. He moved to Albany five years ago when he accepted a position with a hedge fund as a mid-level analyst. Two years ago, he was promoted to senior portfolio manager. He has no family to speak of and except for the time he spends at the Cobra Club, he leads a pretty lackluster social life. At least, that’s what I thought. How did you learn about Camilla Souza so fast?”

“I needed some leverage on Parsons,” I reply.
